What is Copyright

WHAT IS COPYRIGHT  AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT STUDENTS AT SDSM&T?

  • WHEN IS SHARING BAD?
  • WHEN IS SHARING ILLEGAL?
  • WHEN DOES SHARING INFRINGE ON COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS?

opyright infringement is the act of exercising, without permission or legal authority, one or more of the exclusive right granted to the copyright owner under Section 106 of the Copyright Act (Title 17 of the United States Code).  These rights include the right to reproduce or distribute a copyrighted work (like a sound recording).  In the file-sharing context, downloading or uploading substantial parts of a copyrighted work without authority constitutes an infringement.

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology allows students to have more Internet access than most universities because SDSM&T understands and respects that our students want to use the best technology available without restriction.   However, with this less restrictive access comes great responsiblity.  It is the shared responsibility of the entire Campus Community to ensure that Internet privileges remain unrestricted and that those privleges are not misused.

More information on how the entire SDSM&T Campus Community will work together to combat unauthorized distribution of copyrighted materials will be posted on this site soon.
