| PROTECTING YOUR MACHINE AGAINST SPYWARE |
Spybot – Search & Destroy Installation 1. On your desktop, double-click on My Computer 2. Type F:\install\spybot-Search&Destroy in the address bar 3. Double-click on spybotsd13.exe 4. The Select Setup Language window should pop-up. Select English from the drop down menu, and click OK. 5. Now you should be in the set-up wizard. Click Next>. 6. Click on “I accept the agreement” so that the circle to the left of it has a dot in it. Click Next>. 7. It asks you to select a location. The default is C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy. If you wish to change the location, do so here. You may do so by typing in the destination location, or else by browsing to it. |
Fig. 1 8. You should have arrived at a screen that appears like the picture above. Make sure ‘Full installation’ is selected from the drop down menu. Then click Next>. (Fig. 1) 9. It asks you where you’d like the icons located (name of the folder) on the Start Menu. The default location is Spybot – Search & Destroy. If you wish to change the location, do so here. You may do so by typing in the destination location, or else by browsing to it. |

Here you may choose if you want a desktop icon or a Quick Launch icon (on your toolbar just to the right of the Start button) by selecting or deselecting the check box. Place a check mark beside SDHelper (if it isn’t already) and make sure there isn’t one beside TeaTimer. Click Next>. (Fig. 2) 11. Review the installation information. If there is anything you wish to change you may do so by going back to the necessary screen. If every thing looks right click Install. 12. After install, you may choose to run Spybot by placing a check mark in the box, or to return to your desktop by removing the check mark |
Running Spybot 1. Open Spybot. You may do this by double-clicking on a desktop icon (if you chose to have one created), single-clicking on the Quick Start icon (if you chose to have one created), or through the Start Menu (Start>All Programs>Spybot – Search & Destroy [default]).

Fig 5 Pictured above is the main Spybot window. This will be what you see whenever you start the program from here on out. This tutorial will familiarize you with the Update (steps 10-12), Immunize (steps 13-15), and Search & Destroy (steps 16-20) functions. (Fig. 5) |
| 3. Click the ‘Next’ button. 4. Click the ‘Search for updates’ button. 5. After it is finished searching the ‘Download all available updates’ button will become active. Click it. 6. A pop-up will appear to inform you that it is downloading. After it has finished, click the ‘Next’ button. 7. Click the ‘Immunize this system’ button. 8. The program will tell you when immunization is finished with a message below the ‘Immunize this system’ button. Click ‘Next’. 9. Click ‘Start using the program’. 10. Click the ‘Update’ button on the left hand side of the main window. (Fig. 5) |
Fig 6 11. Your screen should now look like the above picture. Click ‘Search for Updates’. (Fig. 6) 12. After it is done searching, a list of updates similar to the one above should appear. Place check marks beside all updates by clicking on the empty boxes. Click ‘Download Updates’. A pop-up with a green progress bar at the bottom should appear. It will disappear when the downloading is finished and the question marks to the right of the check boxes will turn in to green arrows. (Fig. 6) 13. When updating is finished click on the ‘Immunize’ button on the left hand menu. (Fig. 6) |

14. Click the ‘Immunize’ button with the green plus sign beside it. It will only take a short time. (Fig. 7) 15. To double check if it worked, you may click the ‘Check again’ button. A pop-up will appear that says “All known bad products are blocked”. Click ‘OK’. 16. Click the ‘Search & Destroy’ button. (Fig. 7) |

Fig 9 18. A list of problems will appear. Spybot automatically checks the problems for you. Click the ‘Fix selected problems’. (Fig. 9) 19. It will create a system restore point, and then ask you for conformation. Click ‘Yes’. A green progress bar will appear at the bottom of the window. 20. It will tell you how many problems it fixed. Click ‘Ok’. |
