TIMELINE of MAJOR EVENTS in SDSM&T COMPUTING HISTORY

 

    
1978

Cyber Mainframe was the major computing power on campus.  300 baud modems were used to communicate with the Cyber through serial connections.  Taken out of production December 31, 1999

1986

1 IBM type server was put in place to handle the AutoCAD-C/M needs

1989

Coax network installed - 10Mb

1989

First Email via the Cyber Mainframe

1990

Probably 100 PCs on campus

1991

3 IBM servers are now operational running Novell - used as application servers and storage for faculty/staff, students.

1991

Broadband network installed - 1Mb

1992

Internet 1 installed at 56K

1992

Windows Operating system installed - first graphical operating system for SDSM&T

1994

Cat 3 Network installed - 10Mb

1994

Fiber Optics installed between buildings

1995

Approximately 200 PCs on campus

1995

Internet 1 connection at T1 (1.44Mb)

1996

First Windows Server Installed

1997

Network between buildings was at 100Mb

1999

Windows 2000 Server/Active Directory

1999

Viruses starting to hit - Code Red

2000

Approximately 500 machines on campus

2000

Internet 2 connection 45Mb

2000

Internet 1 connection at T1 (1.44Mb)

2001

Email for the students installed - "Gold" server comes alive

2003

Wireless installed on campus

2003

Football field wired for network - all buildings/are now wired

2003

First TabletPC hits campus - slate tablet (no keyboard)

2003

1Gb connections between the buildings

2004

Migrated to a statewide Active Directory

2005

Approximately 1200 machines on campus

2005

Wireless everywhere on campus

2005

TabletPC Pilot Program

2006

TabletPC Program implemented for incoming Freshmen

TabletPC Program is in full swing
